This post focuses on how money affects both the family of Willy Loman and similarly, how it affects my own family.

Money and Housing

While reading death of a salesman, the topic of money comes up quite a lot and this reminded me of some conversations between my own family.

In death of a salesman, their main issue is that Willy Loman doesn’t think they have enough money in their family. This is due to the fact that Willy wants to be the best and is constantly comparing himself to other families.

While my own family isn’t exactly like this, there are times when the topic of money comes up in conversation. For example, sometimes my parents would wish we had a bit more money so we could have a bigger house. My family wasn’t ever short on money, but there are times when my parents think life might be a bit better if we could afford a larger house.

There is also the fact that Willy compares himself to other families that reminded me of my family. Sometimes when the topic of money comes up, comparisons to other families arise as well. And like in Death of a Salesman, this puts a strain on my family’s relationship at times as well.

The difference between our two families is that Willy wants more money because he wants to be the best. For my family, usually these conversations will pop up because there is some issue with the space in our house. For example if our house was unorganized and there was an issue with it being messy or being a lack of space in general.

Obviously, it wouldn’t actually be that hard to fix this problem as the simple answer would just be to clean the house and organize it. If we did that, there would probably be a lot more space right away. But of course my parents would think that the easier way to fix this would simply be to get a bigger house. But to get a bigger house, we would need more money. This is how the conversation usually went.

Unfortunately, house prices have gone up a lot during the past few years so getting a larger house now seems unlikely.
